Aims, Ethos and Values

At Sandfield Close Primary School, we believe that children should be prepared not only academically, but also for their role as global citizens in the wider world. 

By providing access to a broad curriculum, along with a range of experiences, we aim to provide children with the knowledge and skills needed in order for them to succeed in terms of both their education and adult life. Our curriculum is underpinned by our school values.

The British Values are also embedded within our curriculum so that children are taught to understand different ways of life and are made aware of the importance of tolerance and respect towards one another. 

Our school values focus upon encouraging children to uphold the values which we believe to be important.

British Values

At Sandfield Close Primary School, we are committed to promoting the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. Our aim is to help children develop a deep understanding of respect and leave primary school fully equipped for life in modern Britain.

Throughout their time with us, pupils will explore these values in meaningful ways, reflecting on their personal significance and relevance to the world around them. By engaging with key national and global events, children will be encouraged to consider what is socially responsible and morally right. They will also be supported in challenging stereotypes and misconceptions, fostering a more inclusive and thoughtful outlook.

Democracy - What do we do at Sandfield Close?

  • Provide pupils with a broad general knowledge public institutions and services and promote respect for these 

  • Teach pupils how they can influence decision-making through the democratic process 

  • Within the curriculum we provide information about the advantages and disadvantages of democracy and how it works in Britain 

  • Encourage pupils to become involved in decision-making processes and ensure they are listened to in school by helping them to express their views 

  • Provide opportunities for learning where pupils are able to argue and defend their points of view  

The Rule of Law - What do we do at Sandfield Close?

 

  • Ensure school rules and expectations are clear and fair 

  • School rules within the classroom 

  • Class rules and rewards for adhering to these rules 

  • Help pupils to distinguish right from wrong 

  • Help pupils to respect the law and the basis on which it is made 

  • Help pupils to understand that living under the rule of law protects individuals 

  • Include visits from the police across the year 

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths - What do we do at Sandfield Close?

 

 

  • Help pupils to acquire an understanding of, and respect for, their own and other cultures and ways of life 

  • Challenge prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour 

  • Organise visits to places of worship and develop awareness of faith through religious education. 

Mutual Respect - What do we do at Sandfield Close?

 

 

  • Promote respect for individual differences and educate children to perceive these differences positively 

  • Teach children to disagree in a respectful way 

  • Develop critical personal thinking skills in order to rationalise 

Individual Liberty - What do we do at Sandfield Close?

 

 

  • Assist pupils in developing their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence 

  • Encourage pupils to be aware of their rights and to take responsibility for their actions 

  • Model freedom of speech and challenge stereotypes
