Our Sunshine Room aims to:
Provide a safe and purposeful environment in which children can feel happy, safe and supported
Provide a personalised curriculum that meets each child’s needs, focussing on meaningful learning to develop a child’s targets
Provide children with specialist equipment and resources to support them with their sensory and communication needs
Provide children with encouragement and opportunities to develop their social and communication skills
Provide children with opportunities to integrate with their peers and the wider community by accessing peers and facilities in the inclusive mainstream school.
Work in partnership with parents, carers and professionals to support each child
Identifying and Reviewing Need
The DSP will operate with the framework from the revised SEND code of Practise 2014 and Local Authority Guidelines.
All children with an EHCP will have individualised targets. Progress towards these targets will be continually monitored by the DSP staff and the SENDCo
Targets are reviewed three times a year formally, one of which will be the annual EHCP review with parents and careers. At the annual review of the EHCP the child may be set new targets in collaboration with other professionals and parents.
Inclusion and Access to School
We see inclusion as a strength in our school. The Sunshine Room is a valued and integrated part of Sandfield Close Primary School. Children will have specific lessons in the DSP but will then have lessons, where children have strengths, in the school with their peers in their year group. Children will receive the levels of support needed to enable them to progress within the mainstream environment. This will ensure that the individual needs of the children are met. The curriculum will reflect the needs of the children and provide them with focused and meaningful learning which addresses the social, communication and interaction needs for each child.
