Designated Specialist Provision

At Sandfield Close Primary School, we are proud to offer a Designated Specialist Provision (DSP) called The Sunshine Room.

Admission Information

  • Admission is for children with an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP), focusing on communication and interaction needs.
  • Placement decisions are made by Leicester City Special Education Services (SES), not the school.
  • The Sunshine Room cannot accommodate children with complex sensory, physical, or medical needs.
  • Maximum capacity: 10 places.
  • We accept children from Reception to Year 6.

  • Lunchtime Supervisors: Mrs Patel and Mrs Dudhaiya

Our Aims.

Identifying and Reviewing Need

  • Operates under the SEND Code of Practice 2014 and Local Authority guidelines.
  • Individualised targets set for each child with an EHCP.
  • Progress monitored continuously; targets formally reviewed three times a year.
  • Annual EHCP reviews involve parents, carers, and professionals.

Inclusion and Access

  • Sunshine Room is an integral part of Sandfield Close Primary School.
  • Children receive specialised lessons in the DSP and join mainstream classes where possible.
  • Curriculum tailored to individual social, communication, and interaction needs.
  • Support provided to help children progress within mainstream settings.

Home-School Links

  • Parents and carers encouraged to be involved in their child’s education.
  • Parents’ evenings held twice yearly (October and February).
  • EHCP reviews held annually.
  • Open communication via phone, email, ParentMail, and ClassDojo.
  • Meetings can be arranged at any time via the school office.

Links Beyond School

  • Staff access training and services from Local Authority and Specialist Education Service (SES).
  • DSP staff network with other Leicester DSPs to share best practice.
